You’ve been at it for months. Getting up early to exercise, eating right, avoiding the unnecessary calories of alcohol … but after a certain point, you found you just couldn’t lose any more fat. The result: your body looks better than it used to, but you’ve still got a few unsightly lumps and bulges in undesirable places. For many people, this is where liposuction comes in. At Ageless Impressions – Plastic Surgery Institute, Dr. Mark E. Richards has performed many liposuction procedures for patients from across the nation and around the world. Using a relatively new, low-pain technology called VASER® LipoSelection®, Dr. Richards helps his clients realize their dreams of having a trim, toned figure with as little discomfort and recovery time as possible. Read more about how this procedure can help you.

Is Liposuction Right for You?

While liposuction (sometimes referred to as lipoplasty) has helped countless people since the modern version of the procedure first appeared in the early 1980s, not everyone is a good candidate for the treatment. Generally speaking, good liposuction candidates will be in good physical shape, having used traditional weight loss techniques such as diet and exercise to remove as much excess fat as possible. This policy is advisable for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, a liposuction procedure can safely remove only a limited amount of material before the risk of certain medical complications arises (though Dr. Richards is a recognized authority on the safe performance of higher volume liposuction procedures). In addition, patients who have demonstrated a commitment to fitness are more likely to keep the weight off and enjoy the benefits of their surgery.

When appropriate, though, liposuction can offer excellent body sculpting possibilities to people with stubborn fat pockets in the trunk, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, and elsewhere, especially when combined with an arm lift, breast lift, or tummy tuck to address the shape of the skin. These procedures are often combined in a series of plastic surgery procedures after weight loss. Dr. Richards uses his years of expertise with liposuction to help his patients make intelligent, informed decisions about whether or not this procedure is right for them and what quality of results can be expected.

The VASER® LipoSelection® Method of Liposuction

Liposuction has been practiced regularly for over two decades now, but new technological adaptations are still emerging that make the procedure safer and more effective. One of these, VASER® LipoSelection®, has become a preferred method for Dr. Mark E. Richards, one of the nation’s most acclaimed and progressive cosmetic surgeons. Traditional liposuction is notorious for the bruising, swelling, and discomfort that often come with it, largely the result of damage to the non-fat tissue structures — such as nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue — in the sculpted areas.

The VASER® method, an improvement on existing ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) technology, seeks to minimize these effects by breaking up the fat before suction without harming these other tissues. In the LipoSelection® procedure, Dr. Richards applies ultrasonic sound waves to the tissue in the fat deposit before using liposuction to remove it from the body. Thanks to the patented design of the VASER® instruments, the sound waves liquefy the relatively soft fat cells without rupturing other tissues. This breakdown of the cells, combined with the injection of a numbing solution, allows the fat to be suctioned out through a small incision in the skin with relative ease. As a result, the doctor can achieve more finely sculpted results — especially important for detailed work in cheek lifts and chin liposuction — and the patient experiences less pain in recovery. Liposuction patients who have come to the Ageless Impressions Plastic Surgery Institute can attest that VASER® LipoSelection® offers superior aesthetic results with minimal side effects.

After liposuction treatment, patients typically need at least a few days to recover before resuming normal activity. A compression bandage will also be worn under regular clothing to help deal with swelling. Discomfort and bruising are likely, but may be reduced with certain medications. All of these negative side effects of liposuction are usually minimized with the VASER® LipoSelection® method, allowing the patient to enjoy his or her new body as soon as possible.
