BOTOX® Cosmetic & Xeomin®
As we age, the effects of stress and exhaustion on the aesthetic of the face can make us appear older than we really are – specifically with the appearance of heavy frown lines in the brow and along the forehead. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections can help to rejuvenate your facial features and give you a more youthful, healthy appearance. At Ageless Impressions Plastic Surgery Institute, we offer BOTOX® Cosmetic as a minimally invasive, non-surgical way to enhance your overall look.
Unlike Restylane® injection treatment, which works by plumping up the skin with injected fillers, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections work by adjusting the behavior of the muscles underneath the wrinkled skin. Specifically designed to eliminate the appearance of heavy frown lines in the brow, this treatment provides highly effective but temporary relief from the angry, concerned appearance that some people develop with age. Indeed, BOTOX® Cosmetic is so easy and effective that it has become one of the most frequently performed procedures at office of Dr. Mark E. Richards.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is inserted into the muscles of the brow via a few very small injections in one quick procedure — usually five minutes or less. The tiny amounts of toxin then disrupt the activity of the overly tense muscles, smoothing the brow and leaving it fresh and young-looking once more. Despite the fact that it is derived from a toxin, BOTOX® Cosmetic is completely safe, virtually painless, and only very rarely causes serious side effects. The effects will become visible within a few days after the treatment and last up to four months, at which point the injection can be repeated.
Consisting of a highly diluted form of the protein botulinum toxin type A, Xeomin® is a cosmetic injectable similar to BOTOX® Cosmetic. This specially formulated injectable can provide beautiful results without creating a “frozen” appearance. Often referred to as a “naked” neuromodulator, Xeomin® differs from other botulinum toxin-based injectables because it does not contain the proteins found in comparable products. Once injected into the targeted areas, the underlying muscles will become temporarily relaxed, preventing them from contracting and causing fine lines. Patients begin to notice the effects approximately 5 days after treatment, and results should improve over time. Typically the effects of Xeomin® will fade after approximately four months, but they can be maintained with follow-up treatments.

What areas of the face can BOTOX® Cosmetic improve?
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Xeomin® are both commonly administered to the forehead, between the brows, and around the eye area to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in these areas. BOTOX® injections can also be used to treat other issues, including wrinkles around the mouth, nose, chin, and bands in the neck. Your particular needs and goals will determine the best approach. In some cases, Dr. Richards may recommend a different injectable such as a filler. BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers can sometimes be used in combination to enhance your outcome.
Does it hurt?
Your comfort is a high priority, and most patients report little discomfort. We use ultra-fine needles and a local anesthetic to help minimize pain, and cold compresses can further reduce unwanted sensations. The procedure is very quick, often taking as little as three to five minutes, and any discomfort should be fleeting.
How long does it take to see results?
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Xeomin® will take five days to a week for the full effect. Dermal fillers offer instant improvement, but may create mild swelling for a few days. You should keep this in mind if you’re planning a treatment before a special event.
What are the side effects and how can I avoid them?
Symptoms following injection typically will be minor and short-lived. These effects include swelling, redness, and bruising at the injections sites. You should be able to return to your normal routine immediately after the procedure, and many patients schedule their treatment over a lunch break.
How long will the results last?
Cosmetic injectables offer temporary facial rejuvenation, and with BOTOX® Cosmetic and Xeomin®, these effects typically last between four to five months. Some people find that one or the other brand offers longer-lasting benefits, but this can vary from person to person. Occasional maintenance injections can help extend the duration of the outcome. Dermal fillers usually nine months to well over a year, but they accomplish different goals.
Are there any alternatives I should consider?
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Xeomin® are just two of the cosmetic injectables we offer. Our practice also has an extensive selection of dermal fillers, which can minimize the appearance of fine lines, add volume, and stimulate collagen production for younger-looking features. Other skin treatments may also be helpful, depending on your individual needs and desired outcome. We can help find the ideal approach plan for your goals.
